Accounts in the so-called “social” media

Flensburg University of Applied Sciences has accounts in “social” networks and platforms.

Please be aware that your data may be processed outside the European Union/EEA when you use our accounts on “social” media. This may result in risks for you. This makes the enforcement of your rights more difficult. The data can only be accessed by the providers and they are the only ones that can take necessary measures and provide information.

Although, according to the jurisdiction of the Court of Justice of the European Union FUAS holds partial responsibility for the providers of the social media platforms complying with European and German data protection standards, we can, in fact, not comply with this obligation as the services provided by Facebook at least do not comply with European law (https://www.datenschutzzentrum.de/artikel/1244-Handlungsbedarf-fuer-Facebook-Fanpage-Betreiber,-Handlungsbedarf-fuer-Facebook.html (article in German)).

Facebook is certified in accordance with the “Privacy Shield Framework”. Privacy Shield is controversial and the agreement could be cancelled – as was its predecessor, the “Safe Harbour” agreement.

The providers of social media platforms usually process your data for market research and advertising purposes. This means that your activities as a user of these platforms and your interests may be used to create user profiles. These profiles then can be used to post ads that presumably match your interests within and outside of these platforms.

The providers of social media platforms normally store cookies on the devices you use. These cookies store your activities as a user and your interests. Furthermore, data can be stored in these user profiles independently of the devices you use, this particularly applies if you have an account with the platform in question and you are logged in.
